Jefferson was made in 1988 by slowing down and reversing sections of the Tom Waits song On the Nickel. The altered recording was then fed through many layers of guitar pedal processing. Jefferson I is rich in high frequency information, Jefferson II in low frequency information. The two were recorded to cassette tapes and were played back at the same time on 2 machines. Cassette technology being what it was, it was rare to find 2 machines which would stay synchronised over the duration of the piece - however, I liked the result of the two separating, and so (expensively) digitally faked the effect of the (cheap) analogue equipment for this version.
